Preserve Muscatine’s Past, Guide Its Future: Board Vacancies Now Open

MUSCATINE, Iowa – The City of Muscatine is inviting residents to apply for open positions on the Historic Preservation Commission and the Zoning Board of Adjustment. Community members who care about protecting Muscatine’s heritage or who want to help interpret and apply local zoning ordinances are encouraged to submit an application.

Historic Preservation Commission

The Historic Preservation Commission helps protect Muscatine’s historic, cultural, and architectural character. Members work to preserve significant sites and districts and ensure the city’s historic assets are maintained for future generations.

  • Meeting schedule: 5:15 p.m. on the fourth Monday of each month at the Musser Public Library
  • Term length: Five years, with a limit of two full terms

Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA)

The Zoning Board of Adjustment is a quasi-judicial citizen board responsible for interpreting zoning ordinances. Its duties include granting variances for unique hardships, approving special exceptions or conditional uses, and hearing appeals of planning staff decisions. The board plays a key role in ensuring fairness and flexibility in local development.

  • Meeting schedule: 5:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month in the City Council chambers at Muscatine City Hall
  • Term length: Five years, with a limit of two consecutive terms

Application Information

Applications for both boards are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 27, 2026. Forms are available on the City of Muscatine website or at Muscatine City Hall. Completed applications may be mailed or delivered in person to:

The City’s Nominating Committee will review all submissions, considering qualifications, potential conflicts of interest, and compliance with Iowa’s gender balance requirements. Final appointments will be made by the Muscatine City Council.
