MUSCATINE, Iowa – A former Southeastern Iowa resident, who spent over 20 years away from his hometown, is returning to the area that he grew up in to serve as the Building Division Manager for the Community Development Department of the City of Muscatine.

Jason Garmoe, MCP, officially began his duties as the Building Division Manager on Wednesday, Feb. 6, replacing Senior Inspector Michael Stensland who retired on Dec. 28, 2018.

“I am looking forward to getting out and meeting the public and the contractors,” Garmoe said. “I want to know what concerns the contractors might have and what we need to address in terms of permitting, inspections, and response time.”

Garmoe holds over 20 certifications from the International Code Council, seven Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certifications, three Federal Emergency Management Agency certifications, and four State of Iowa training certificates.

“We are excited to be able to have someone with Jason’s qualifications to lead the building division,” Jodi Royal-Goodwin, interim director of Community Development said.

Garmoe met with the Community Development staff and is looking forward to working with them.

“We are a team and I value their opinions,” Garmoe said. “We will do things together as a team.”

Garmoe spent the past year as the compliance, safety, and health officer for the Iowa OSHA in Des Moines, Iowa. He previously served as the energy advisor for Maquoketa Valley Electric Cooperative in Anamosa, Iowa, the chief electrical inspector for the City of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, combination residential/commercial trades inspector for the Institute for Building Technology and Safety in Herndon, Virginia, and began as a building inspector for Jefferson County Commission in Charles Town, West Virginia.

A graduate of Burlington High School and Southeastern Community College, Garmoe also attending the Virginia Building Code Academy, and the OHSA Training Institute.

An open house will be held at City Hall in March to welcome Garmoe and his family to Muscatine. Details on the open house will be announced later.
