[ARCHIVED] Mississippi Drive closed Iowa to Chestnut Aug. 6-8

080318 2nd street 01

MUSCATINE,            Iowa – Work on the brickwork between Iowa and Chestnut streets, repair to a sanitary sewer, and repairs to the Chestnut street pedestrian crossing for the Canadian Pacific Railroad will be accomplished during a three-day closure of Mississippi Drive from Monday, Aug. 6, through Wednesday, Aug. 8.

The closure will affect the two driving lanes from Iowa Avenue to Chestnut Street. Access to the Pearl View Condominium and the Merrill Hotel will be maintained. Drivers are urged to avoid the area during this time period and use Chestnut Street or Pine Street to access Mississippi Drive heading west or to access the downtown area when heading east on Mississippi Drive.

The Linn Street and Pine Street intersections with 7th Street will be closed starting Friday (Aug. 3) as KE Flatwork and KMA Excavating begin preparing these intersections for repaving later this month.

The Chestnut Street intersection was reopened on Friday (Aug. 3) after the prep work for repaving has been completed. City project managers state that a ramp of millings will be put in place to reopen the intersection but advise drivers to seek alternate routes if possible. The Linn Street and Pine Street intersections will also be reopened with ramps of millings once they have been prepped for paving.

WEST HILL SEWER SEPARATION PROJECT

The Spruce Street intersection is currently closed as KMA Excavating works on the sanitary sewer to that intersection. Storm sewer work on Linn and Locust Streets will be completed Aug. 6-20 with KMA working on the sanitary sewer from Spruce to Locust Aug. 20-27. The final two sections of the underground work will be completed by Sept. 21, weather depending. Those two sections include Spruce to 8th Street (Aug. 27-Sept. 12) and Locust to 8th Street (Sept. 12-21).

The second phase of concrete work in the reconstruction of 7th Street should begin next week according to City of Muscatine project managers. KE Flatwork and KMA Excavating have finished the earthwork and rocking of the block from Iowa to Chestnut and are scheduled to begin pouring concrete next week, depending on the weather.

Preparation of 7th Street through the Linn Street intersection, including the Chestnut and Pine Street intersections, is tentatively scheduled for completion by Aug. 13. Paving from Iowa to Linn is scheduled for Aug. 6-Sept. 10 with the blocks opened to traffic once the contractor has finished sidewalks, backfilling, seeding, and cleaning of the street.

Work on preparing and paving Linn to Locust streets is tentatively scheduled Aug. 13-Sept. 28 with the final two sections (Spruce toward 8th and Locust toward 8th) tentatively scheduled Sept. 17-Oct. 26.

Phase 4A of the West Hill Sewer Separation Project is tentatively scheduled to be completed by November 9. The original contract date was November 30.

MISSISSIPPI DRIVE CORRIDOR PROJECT

KE Flatwork and subcontractors Heister Masonry and Hardscape Solutions, Inc. (HSI) have been busy on the section of the Mississippi Drive Corridor Reconstruction Project from Iowa to the #1 Alley on Mulberry Avenue with the District Monument located at the Walnut Street intersection nearing completion and brickwork in the intersections and medians also nearing completion.

HSI will be working on the bricks in the median bricks and crosswalk in front of the Pearl View Condominium during the three-day closure of Mississippi Drive (Aug. 6-8) between Iowa and Chestnut Street while KMA Excavating will complete camera work in the sewer line, and KE Flatwork will be repairing the pedestrian crossing for the Canadian Pacific Railroad at Chestnut Street.

KE Flatwork has completed work at the Cedar Street intersection except for the railroad crossing and is now working on the sidewalk towards Walnut Street. Yet to be completed is the Walnut Street intersection, and the final section of the sidewalk east from Walnut to Mulberry.

Muscatine Power & Water will be installing the street lights along Mississippi Drive from Iowa to Mulberry and the traffic signals at Cedar Street during the final two weeks of August. The landscape contractor is expected to be on site the last week of August or the first of September.

Mississippi Drive from Iowa to the #1 Alley on Mulberry Avenue is tentatively scheduled for opening on September 29.

2ND STREET – Mulberry to Mad Creek

Underground work in the Oak Street intersection with 2nd Street is tentatively scheduled to wrap up this week with Taylor Ridge Drilling arriving on Aug. 13 to drill the foundations for the traffic standards. Work on preparing the intersection for paving will also begin next week.

Work from the railroad crossing east to Mad Creek will continue for the next month with an anticipated opening date sometime in late October.
