[ARCHIVED] Rescheduled Health & Safety Day is Saturday, June 16

Tom Summitt

MUSCATINE, Iowa – For the past 27 years the Muscatine County EMS has hosted young and old for a day of fun and learning. The 2018 EMS Saturday was planned for May 12 but weather forced postponement of the event until this Saturday, June 16.

Activities at Blain’s Farm & Fleet, 330 North Highway 61, Muscatine, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the event is expected to be bigger and better than ever.

“We have a lot more activities planned that everyone,” Tom Summitt, Muscatine Firefighter who has organized the event for the past 27 years, said. “We have also had several organizations that wanted to work with us.”

The event has been held annually as part of National EMS Week which was May 20-26 this year with special presentations to recognize EMS volunteers throughout the day.

UnityPoint Health – Trinity Muscatine is one of those organizations that will be taking part in Health & Safety Day 2018 along with the Canine Activity Center of Muscatine.

“We wanted to do something a little different this year and I think we have accomplished that task,” Summitt said.

Fingerprinting and taking photographs of children attending the event will again be provided along with a fire house from West Liberty where children can learn fire/burn prevention tips through a fun, safe simulation.

Tentatively MedForce1 plans to land in the parking lot at 11 a.m. for those in attendance to have an up close look at the helicopter.

“Hopefully the weather will cooperate and there are no other calls for the helicopter,” Summitt said.

Other EMS and fire department vehicles will also be at the event for attendees to view and learn about.

UnityPoint Health – Trinity Muscatine will be sponsoring a Teddy Bear Clinic where youth can bring their favorite teddy bear or stuffed animal for a check-up.

The Muscatine Police Department will be sponsoring a medication drop off site for residents to bring unused or expired medications for safe disposal.

The Performance Class of the Canine Activity Center of Muscatine will be on hand to talk with children and adults about pet safety with live demonstrations on how to approach along with discussions on when and when not to approach a canine.

The American Red Cross will also be on hand demonstrating their services.

The Melon city Bike Club along with the Iowa Bicycle Coalition will be sponsoring a bike rodeo. Bring your bike for a safety check and ride in the bike rodeo to receive a free helmet.

There will also be a non-perishable food drive to benefit local food pantries.
