[ARCHIVED] Muscatine woman pulled from river Monday dies

Water Rescue

MUSCATINE, Iowa – A 56-year-old Muscatine woman is dead after being rescued from the Mississippi River Monday (Feb. 5) evening by emergency responders.

Emergency personnel responded to a report of a person who jumped off the Highway 92 bridge that spans the Mississippi River at 4:26 p.m. Monday. Rescue personnel found the female already in the water and conducted a water rescue. She was brought to shore and transported to UnityPoint Health-Trinity in Muscatine where she was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.

Rescue personnel worked quickly to break through approximately 15 feet of ice so that the rescue boat could reach open water. Rescuers were able to reach the female quickly and brought her into the boat where medical care began immediately.

Approximately 30 personnel from the Muscatine Police Department, Muscatine Sheriff’s Office, Muscatine Search and Rescue, and the Muscatine Fire Department were on scene as well as the county emergency manager.

Three responders were taken to Trinity Muscatine in private vehicles for assessment due to exposure to the extreme cold and wet environment. None of the responders showed any medical distress on scene, and the assessment was done as a preventative measure.

The rescue and investigation were conducted by the Muscatine Police Department, Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, Muscatine Search and Rescue, and the Muscatine Fire Department.
