MUSCATINE, Iowa – The Riverbend Neighbors group will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. Monday (Feb. 15, 2021) in the Council Chambers at Muscatine City Hall to hear about a potential project that would benefit neighborhoods along the Grandview Avenue corridor. The targeted area is from Hershey Avenue to the Mississippi River and from Carver Corner to the U.S. 61 Bypass.

“We want the people in the south end neighborhoods to know just how important they are to the success of Muscatine,” Jodi Royal-Goodwin, City of Muscatine Community Development Director, said. “And we need their feedback as we move ahead with plans for this potential project.”

Muscatine City Council members Nadine Brockert, who represents the 4th Ward where the neighborhoods are located, and Peggy Gordon, 3rd Ward representative, have worked with Royal-Goodwin to develop an outline of a project that has the potential to re-invigorate, re-invest- and re-fresh the neighborhoods along the corridor.

The meeting is open to the public and those attending in person will be required to wear facial coverings and adhere to social distance requirements. The balcony will be open to provide extra space for the public to sit, listen to the presentation, and to provide feedback.

For those who would like to attend the meeting but not in person, the meeting will be broadcast live virtually. Details of how to access the virtual presentation and to comment during the meeting is listed below. The meeting will also be shown live on the City of Muscatine YouTube channel.

The proposed two-year project is being planned around two infrastructure projects that will occur over the next several years including the Grandview Avenue Corridor Reconstruction Project and the Redundant Force Main Project.

Brockert and Gordon are excited to present information on the proposed two-year project that will jump start reinvestment along the Grandview Avenue corridor.

“Re-invigorating, re-investing, and re-freshing the southern access to our city will allow us to improve service to our residents and make a great first impression to visitors,” Brockert said.

The project will be guided by a steering committee that will include neighborhood representation, local business owners, City staff, City Council members, and representatives from the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Pillars of the project include the street project, residential support, recreational amenities, economic development, and business support.

“The basics already exist in retail, service, businesses, restaurants, industry, school, churches, recreation, and most importantly, the residents,” Gordon said. “This initiative will work to build on this foundation.”

Attendees will be asked what they value in their neighborhood and how to make it better. In addition, Rebuilding Together Muscatine will be on hand to describe the services they provide and will have applications available.

Please note that a majority of Muscatine City Council members have indicated that they will either be at City Hall for the presentation or attending the meeting virtually. As such, the meeting may also be considered a meeting of the Muscatine City Council. However, there will be no action taken by the City Council during the Riverbend Neighbors meeting.

The Muscatine City Council will discuss the project during their March 11, 2021, In-Depth Session.
