MUSCATINE, Iowa – The Muscatine City Council will conduct a public hearing on declaring a section of real estate with undetermined ownership as surplus property when the Council meets in a virtual meeting on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020. The McKee Button Company is requesting that the City of Muscatine issue a quick claim deed for the 3,826 square foot area to release any possible claim of ownership of the area by the City.

The Muscatine City Council meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, December 3, with information on joining the virtual session listed below. The session will also be broadcast live on the City of Muscatine YouTube channel and be shown live on Muscatine Power & Water Cable Channel 2.

The Council will also be asked to approve the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2020, during the meeting Thursday. The City of Muscatine received an unmodified (“clean”) opinion from Bohnsack & Frommelt LLP, the City’s auditing firm, when the audit was completed in mid-November. A copy of the report will be available on the City of Muscatine website under Finance & Records/Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports after the report is accepted by the City Council.

The report will be sent to the General Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for judging in their Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting (COA) Program. The City of Muscatine received their 25th consecutive Certificate of Excellence from GFOA for the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2019.

The City of Muscatine, through the work of the Department of Finance, was recognized recently with their 36th consecutive GFOA Budget Presentation Award. Only 10 municipalities and three counties in Iowa have earned this award with Muscatine having the longest streak at 36 followed by Ames at 35. The award recognizes how well an entity's budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device

The second reading of an ordinance striking Title 2, Chapter 13 of the Muscatine City Code (Convention and Visitors Board) will also be held during the Council meeting. The ordinance must be approved by Council before an agreement can be authorized that will allow GMCCI to establish a Tourism Committee.

The public is welcomed to comment during each public hearing. A chat box will be open during the virtual meeting for individuals to notify Council members that they would like to comment. The Mayor will also ask for comments and those wishing to comment should announce their intention at that time.
