MUSCATINE, Iowa – Musco Lighting will unveil plans to develop and promote a new product line in Muscatine, and the Keep Muscatine Beautiful organization will present a proposal for enhanced lighting in the downriver portion of Riverside Park during the Muscatine City Council meeting Thursday, Aug. 5, 2020.

The Muscatine City Council will meet in a virtual session at 7 p.m. Thursday. Details on attending the virtual meeting are listed below.

Mini-Pitch

Musco Lighting will be asking the City Council to approve the concept plans and cost estimate, subject to outside funding, of a Mini-Pitch System™ at the Muscatine Skate Park next to Musser Park on Oregon Street.

Musco Lighting will provide the mini-pitch materials and installation, valued at $70,000, at no cost to the City. Musco Lighting will also help identify funding sources for the remaining $20,000 needed to fund the acrylic surface. The only responsibility of the City will be for any fence removal needed.

John Dindinger and Jason Schillig of Musco Lighting stated in their memo to Council that once installed and operational in the City, the system will help promote exercise and positive activities/choices of the local youth, via soccer, in Muscatine.

The Muscatine Skate Park was built in 2004 as part of the Pearl of the Mississippi Community Projects, and includes a concrete in-line/foot hockey rink. The rink will be repurposed with the Musco Mini-Pitch System™ to accommodate soccer and in-line/foot hockey. The project has already received the endorsement of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission, the soccer community, and the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GMCCI).

More information on the Mini-Pitch System™ can be found by clicking HERE or by downloading the Brochure PDF file.

Riverfront lighting

Keep Muscatine Beautiful (KMB) sponsors the “Almost Friday Fest” event in the downriver end of Riverside Park on the fourth Thursday of each month from June through September. During a highly successful 2019, the organization identified the need for additional lighting in that area of the riverfront.

A $138,000 project was designed to remedy the lighting and electrical issues while also providing electrical options for a future band shell at that location. In-kind donations from Musco Lighting and Muscatine Power & Water (MPW) of $70,000 and other donations received have left a balance of $33,000 to be funded. KMB is asking the City to fund $16,000 of that balance.

Following the KMA presentation, the City Council could make a decision on whether to fund the project at this time or to postpone that decision until a later date.
