MUSCATINE, Iowa – Community members from young to old are invited to come learn about the various emergency response services provided in Muscatine at the 2019 Public Safety Open House from 12-3 p.m. on Sunday (October 20) at the Public Safety Building, 312 E. 5th Street.
Those attending can become active participants in many of the demonstrations that will be offered during the program, and gain first-hand knowledge and experience in the various services provided by the Muscatine Fire Department, Muscatine Police Department, and Muscatine County Joint Communications (MUSCOM).
October is Fire Prevention Month and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) established this year’s theme as “Not every hero wears a cape. Plan and practice your escape”.
Participants will be able to tour the fire station, look at fire and emergency apparatus and meet members of the fire department. There will be a smoke house on site which teaches children how to safely exit a house in a smoke filled atmosphere, live fire burn cell demonstration, ventilation prop to showcase the importance of closing the bedroom door to prevent heat and smoke transfer, hands only CPR skill station, as well as many other displays and activities.
The Muscatine Police Department will have a Special Response Team (SRT) weapons display along with a look inside the MRAP (armored personnel carrier), a DNA/fingerprint station for children, a static patrol vehicle display, an evidence technician (ET) equipment display and demonstration, a meet and greet with a K9 officer, and Monsanto’s seat belt simulator.
The mobile training trailer, “What You Don’t See,” open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The trailer is designed to simulate a “typical” teenager’s bedroom, complete with all the paraphernalia and imagery someone might expect to see, but not necessarily understand from today’s youth. You must be 18 years or older to tour the trailer with attendees learning the meanings of signs, symbols and clothing, common hiding spots, and other things related to the drug culture.
The trailer is sponsored by the Muscatine County Impact of Substance Use Task Force and will also be available at from 4:15-7:30 p.m., on Monday, October 21, at Central Middle School, on Tuesday, October 22, at West Middle School, and on Wednesday, October 23, at Muscatine High School. The trailer will also be available from 1:45-3:45 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, at Muscatine High School.
