[ARCHIVED] Mississippi Drive lane reduction scheduled for July 30

Mississippi Drive Detour for Parks & Recreation on July 30 (JPG)

MUSCATINE, Iowa – The eastbound lane of Mississippi Drive will be closed from Iowa Avenue to Mulberry Avenue on Tuesday, July 30, as the Parks & Recreation Department works on restoration of the planting beds in the medians. The lane closure is expected to last one day.

The planting beds were damaged by the Spring 2019 flood that kept the beds underwater for nearly three months. The Parks & Recreation Department, along with other City staff, have been researching plant varieties that may hold up better in multiple high water events such as what occurred this past spring.

Eastbound traffic will be detoured up Iowa Avenue to 3rd Street, to Mulberry Avenue, and down to 2nd Street. The Iowa Avenue railroad crossing will be open top Riverfront Park but park access will be restricted at the Cedar Street crossing.

Westbound traffic will not be affected by the lane closure but drivers are asked to slow down and use caution when driving through this area for the safety of work crews.

This is just one of several projects being undertaken by the Parks & Recreation Department this summer to repair damage from the spring floods. Staff is also currently working on restoring the  Mississippi Mist, and working on restoration of the Riverview Center and transient docks that were also damaged during the flooding.
