[ARCHIVED] West Hill Project public information meeting set for July 1

Work continues on Phase 4B of West Hill Sewer Separation June 6, 2019 (JPG)

MUSCATINE, Iowa – The City of Muscatine will hold a public information meeting for anyone interested in the West Hill Area Sanitary & Storm Sewer Separation Phase 4B construction project at 6 p.m. Monday, July 1, in the lower level conference room at Muscatine City Hall, 215 Sycamore Street. Attendees are advised to enter only through the front doors of City Hall.

The City will have representatives of the prime contractor, K.E. Flatworks, Inc., along with City staff available to present an overview of where the construction on 8th Street (from Cedar to Linn) stands.

A primary focus of the meeting will be to discuss access to Saints Mary and Mathias Catholic Parish with parishioners and staff once the 8th and Pine intersection is temporarily closed for the construction project. However, City staff and the contractor will be available to discuss all aspects of the current and future sewer separation projects.

Everyone is invited to attend this public meeting.

Phase 4 of the West Hill sewer project is a three-year construction project. Phase 4A was completed during the 2018 construction season and concentrated on 7th Street. Phase 4B is currently underway and concentrates on 8th Street from Cedar to Linn. Phase 4C will be completed in 2020 and will continue work on 8th Street from Linn to Broadway.

PAVING TO BEGIN SOON – KE Flatworks, Inc., will begin work on grading 8th Street from Cedar to Chestnut, Sycamore from 7th to 8th, and Iowa from 7th to 8th in preparation for paving starting Friday, June 28. The contractor has indicated that actual paving of these streets where underground work has already been completed by subcontractor KMA Excavating will begin the week of July 15. A date to reopen those streets to traffic has not been announced as yet.

UNDERGROUND WORK CONTINUES – KMA Excavating anticipates completing underground work up to Chestnut Street prior to the Independence Day holiday. A schedule for underground work from Chestnut to Linn is dependent on the progress to reopen 8th from Cedar to Iowa according to City project managers.

IOWA REMAINS CLOSED – Iowa Avenue will remain closed through the Independence Day holiday. However, KE Flatworks will put down a surface so that parade participants can move through the construction area safely. Iowa from 7th to 8th will only be open for parade participates on July 4 and closed again immediately after the parade. Parade participants and anyone walking in the area are urged to use caution while moving through the construction area.
