MUSCATINE Iowa – East 2nd Street from Oak Street east to just west of Family Dollar is now closed to traffic as KE Flatwork has started removing pavement. This is the second section of the 2nd Street reconstruction as part of the Mississippi Drive Corridor Reconstruction Project.

Drivers are reminded that Oak Street is now closed to through traffic at 5th Street with access still available for Danny’s Sales & Service, Alliant Energy, and the HNI facilities.

KE Flatwork completed the final major pour on Mississippi Drive that finished the driving lanes on Mulberry Avenue up to the No. 1 Alley Monday (June 11) morning with the paving crew moving over to 2nd Street in the afternoon.

Work on repaving the first section of 2nd Street, from Orange to Oak Street, will begin this afternoon or Tuesday, depending on the weather. All work on this section is tentatively scheduled for completion by July 16.

While paving begins on the first section, KE Flatwork has started removal of pavement on the second section of 2nd Street to be rebuilt from Oak Street to just west of Family Dollar. Access to Family Dollar will be from Park Avenue west on 2nd Street. A subcontractor will arrive in Muscatine Wednesday to begin the process of boring underneath the railroad crossing for the installation of a new storm sewer line. KMA Excavating will begin the underground work after that with the entire section tentatively scheduled for completion on September 18.

A lot of work remains for Mississippi Drive with crews now focusing on the medians, sidewalks, and intersections. Landscaping and brickwork will be completed this fall with the section from Iowa Avenue to Mulberry scheduled for reopening on September 28, weather permitting.
