MUSCATINE, Iowa — The City of Muscatine announced that the Muscatine Transfer Station will close at 2 p.m. on Friday due to forecasted extreme cold temperatures. The facility will remain closed throughout the day on Saturday for the safety of staff and residents.
Curbside refuse collection for Friday’s route will be completed prior to the early closure. Republic Services has also indicated that curbside recycling for the Friday “A” route is expected to be completed as scheduled.
Extreme cold in a transfer station's tipping floor causes dangerous ice buildup, machinery issues, and slower waste processing, leading to hazardous, slippery conditions, equipment damage, slowed decomposition, operational disruptions, potential for frozen waste, and increased risk of accidents and downtime, impacting the entire waste management system.
The Muscatine Transfer Station will reopen on Monday.
All other City departments, including MuscaBus, will continue normal operations.
