MUSCATINE, Iowa – The City of Muscatine will join communities around the globe in recognizing the dedicated men and women who keep public pools safe during International Lifeguard and Pool Staff Day on Wednesday, July 31, 2025.
Muscatine Mayor Brad Bark proclaimed July 31, 2025, as International Lifeguard and Pool Staff Appreciation Day in Muscatine during Thursday’s (July 17) City Council meeting. Aquatic Center staff McKenna Schumaker and Claire Schumaker were in attendance to accept the proclamation along with Parks and Recreation Program Supervisor Blake Allington.
McKenna Schumaker is the assistant manager at the Muscatine Aquatic Center and thanked the City for the opportunity to speak about the “incredible individuals who keep our summers safe, fun, and unforgettable.” Watch her presentation during the City Council meeting on YouTube starting at the 20:00 mark.
The Muscatine Parks and Recreation Department will celebrate its hardworking pool team at the Muscatine Aquatic Center, located in Weed Park, with a day of appreciation and public recognition. Guests visiting the pool that day will be encouraged to thank lifeguards and staff for their service and commitment to safety.
“This is a great opportunity to shine a spotlight on the individuals who ensure that our summer aquatic experiences are safe and enjoyable,” said Parks and Recreation Director Rich Klimes. “Their training, vigilance, and professionalism make all the difference.”
International Lifeguard and Pool Staff Day, sponsored by the World Waterpark Association (WWA), is observed annually to honor aquatic staff for the vital role they play in preventing injuries, responding to emergencies, and maintaining a fun, family-friendly environment.
The Muscatine Aquatic Center, which serves thousands of guests each summer, is staffed by a team of certified professionals trained in CPR, first aid, and water rescue techniques.
“We’re proud of our pool staff and lifeguards,” said Blake Allington, Program Supervisor. “They are true unsung heroes of summer, and this day gives the community a chance to recognize their hard work and dedication.”
