MUSCATINE, Iowa – A chemical spill on the tipping floor at the Muscatine Transfer Station has closed the facility for the rest of today (Feb. 7). Officials hope to reopen the facility on Tuesday (Feb. 8).

City of Muscatine officials said that a reaction caused by the chemical spill created an unsafe condition for both the public and for employees at the facility. All employees were evacuated prior to the arrival of emergency personnel from the Muscatine Fire Department.

The City of Muscatine immediately closed the facility to the public as a safety precaution.

The tipping floor is the area where trash is dumped by refuse haulers and the public before being transferred to semi-trucks to be hauled to the Muscatine County Landfill.

Investigation into the cause of the spill is being conducted and more details will be released once that investigation is complete.
